Asthma

Asthma is a syndrome of airway inflammation and constriction which affects the patient with cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. Both allergy and viral infections can trigger an asthmatic episode, as well as exposure to directly irritating substances such as smoke and cosmetic fragrances. Asthma symptoms are increasing in our society, and often require treatment with powerful drugs which cause a variety of side effects.

For people with asthma who want to reduce their dependence on drugs, acupuncture may be one option. It “offers a very viable alternative to the strong medications used by western medicine, particularly the corticosteroids, which slowly deplete the system and damage kidney and adrenal function.

Our experience has shown that in the majority of asthma cases, the patient has an imbalanced immune system. Thus, our treatments focus on balancing and strengthening the immune system. Many patients report significant, lasting benefits in just a few sessions of treatment. Acupuncture and other traditional Chinese medicines aim to cure a condition rather than just treat the symptoms. Acupuncture can help asthma that includes:

• Opening the lungs and bronchial airways

• Clearing phlegm

• Strengthening the lungs and immune system

• Reducing inflammation of the lungs

• Moistening the lungs

• Decreasing the patient’s overall stress
